A seasoned criminal has been charged with first-degree assault after police say he stabbed another man late last month at Third Avenue and University Street.
Bee Thow Saykao, 49, was serving a suspended sentence for criminal trespass and third-degree theft -- crimes he pleaded guilty to Aug. 19 -- when the recent stabbing incident allegedly occurred.
Police believe Saykao stabbed another man several times Oct. 30 with a black pocketknife. He fled down an alley about 6:15 p.m., and police arrested the Saykao with a black pocketknife in his right jacket pocket.
Police say a fistfight came before the stabbing, and the victim was stabbed at least twice in the chest. Court documents indicate Saykao talked of the incident while being recorded in a police car and said the other man punched him after a comment he made regarding someone else selling cigarettes on the street.
Saykao "said he felt blood from the punch, got mad and began hitting the victim," Detective Nathan James wrote in a court documents. "He did not say anything else."
The man had life-threatening stab wounds, police said. He was in serious condition three days after the attack, still unconscious, according to court documents.
Court documents from Saykao's bail hearing last week indicate that he told police he did not stab the victim. The suspect description given by witnesses was that the attacker was a white man in his 40s.
However, charging documents say witnesses positively identified as the Saykao as the stabbing suspect.
He has a criminal history including convictions for burglary, malicious mischief, disorderly conduct, obstructing a police officer and multiple convictions for assault and theft, according to court documents. He was last released from King County Jail on Sept. 3.
On July 13, the man unlawfully entered a Kirkland home, climbing on top of a doghouse and in through a kitchen window. He didn't steal anything, but the homeowner who came home and confronted him did smell "a weird and 'rank' odor," according to court documents.
The suspect was left when confronted, but later pleaded guilty to the crimes and admitted to stealing a ham from the victim's fridge and feeding it to the dog.
Saykao arraignment, at which he's expected to enter a plea, is scheduled for November 17.
