Crosscut: New Center House food plans hang on a thread

Michele Matassa Flores reports that plans to remake the food court at Seattle Center's Center House aren't going so well. Seattle Center wants it redone in time for the 2012 50th anniversary celebration of the 1962 World's Fair, but the proposal attracted only one bidder before the deadline expired.

The lone bidder is the same concessionaire that runs food at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle and Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma. But the bigger issue is that time is slipping by for the city to get what it wanted, which was not merely a new concessionaire but a redesign of the space:

A timeline written in February suggested an RFP (request for proposals) should be issued in May, bids due in July and a contract signed in September. Construction was set to begin in June of 2011 and be completed by March 2012.

A revised schedule calls for an operator to be selected by Jan. 25 and operations to begin in May 2012. It doesn't specify a date for construction to begin.
